MARITIME: Waste management - Hopeless battle or a business case?

Thursday 8 November
14:30 - 15:30

World Economic Forum estimates that 95% of plastic packaging material value is lost after first use, amounting to US$ 120 billion annually. The intrinsic value of municipal solid waste in African urban areas alone exceeds US$ 8 billion. As an inherent business opportunity, this remains largely unexplored. Instead of plastic waste being used as a resource, it is carried by rain, wind and rivers to the sea, at the rate of 8-10 million tons annually on a global scale. How can we make the oceans clean, and make a profit in the process? Our speakers will discuss these challenges and the associated opportunities‚ as well as providing innovative solutions to the global problem of ocean waste.
