Mr. Thabo Mbeki

Mr. Thabo Mbeki is the former President of South Africa, holding the office from 1999 to 2008. Mr. Mbeki is considered one of the architects of the South African economic reform program GEAR from 1996.

During his presidency he served as the Chairman of the African Union, and was one of the initiators of NEPAD. Prior to this, Mr. Mbeki served as the Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa during Mr. Nelson Mandela’s administration between 1994 and 1999. He holds a Master of Economics from the University of Sussex.
